ST. MILDRED CHAPEL, Oakville

Purpose and Goals: A cluster of trees near the existing building already suggested a place of worship, but climatic conditions demanded more shelter than a vault of tree limbs and walls of hedges could provide.

Innovative Techniques: A glass roof permits daylighting with very vigorous interior ivy growth. Mass of interior exposed brick walls retain heat absorbing excessive heat on hot days and radiating heat during cold days.

Implementation: The massive walls provide passively controlled interior temperature and semi-private alcoves for prayer and meditation. Opening windows encourage ventilation.

Demonstration Results: Taking advantage and integrating natural occurring systems ensured the pavilion is simple to operate and easy to maintain.

Cost/Beneifts: Reliance on the best solar orientation allows energy efficiency resulting in less costly fossil fuel usage.
