UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO ROOF (2005)

Purpose and Goals: Make use of a large unattractive and unused rooftop area by implementing a rooftop garden to inspire and educate students residing in the Student Family Residence.  Improve air quality by reducing “urban heat island” effect, reducing smog formation, reducing energy consumption while dramatically increasing the aesthetic value.

Innovative Techniques: By investigating the existing roofing quality and useful life we ensured the introduced intervention would extend the life of this roof versus replacing the existing roof treatment.

Implementation: Native species of plants including Liatris, Viburnum lentago, Echinacea and Monarda provide a healthy and easy to maintain green space.

Demonstration Results: The roof has provide a safe playground for the existing day care.

Cost/Beneifts: Student volunteers assisting in construction and planting as well as long-term maintenance keep costs down.
